Visits to an alpine cheese dairy, a dairy goat and sheep farm, the educational farm Plantahof and Switzerland’s largest cheese dairy.
On our way to the agricultural stations of the tour, we will take the opportunity to visit the stunning historic railway viaduct in Wiesen. This curved single-track stone bridge is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Rhaetian Railway.
Alp Parpan is situated at around 1550m above sea level. It is the mountain estate of the agricultural centre Plantahof with around 50 dairy cows and 100 heifers grazing on the pastures during summer. We will learn about traditional alpine farming and cheese making in the modern show cheese dairy, where the cows milk is processed. Lunch will be served at the historic Restaurant Stätzerhorn.
The organic dairy sheep and goat farm Waldhaus, close to the city of Chur, is Plantahof’s competence centre for small ruminants.
According to its vision, Plantahof wants to be a recognised centre for future-oriented, targeted training and further education; and a place of interesting and profitable encounters between the farming and non-farming population. The training, trial and demonstration farm is diverse. It takes into account all production directions and almost all livestock species. It serves the needs of education and extension and aims to maximise the benefits for agricultural practice. Brown Swiss cattle breeding is part of the tradition and serves as a showcase for Swiss dairy cattle breeding. Different strategies and production directions are covered; the findings with both a grassland based and a performance-oriented herd bring interesting insights for teaching and advising farmers. The good quality of forage and arable farming form the basis for efficient production.
We conclude the tour with a visit to Emmi, the largest cheese dairy in Switzerland. During the last 100 years, Emmi has developed into a multinational company with 25 sites in Switzerland alone. In Landquart, over 100 million kg of milk annually are processed for different types of cheeses.
